What does a mindfulness practice look like for the average, overstretched parent?

_____

Mindfulness is about paying attention. Observe what arises + ground yourself in each moment so that you are fully present.

Don’t try to control, change or label what arises. Instead, simply sit with it.

Pick a single task – something you do every single day, like brushing your teeth – and zero in on the experience by using your 5 senses. Slow down + be intentional while you complete the task.

First steps:

_____

Simply pause. Come into the present + be aware. Set a timer for every 15 minutes as your reminder to frequently pause.

Alternately, set a timer for 2 minutes + focus on your breathing for the entire 2 minutes. Start small then gradually increase the time.

Get a highly-rated mindfulness App like the ones Tara suggests in this week’s free PDF.

Notable quotes from the episode:

_____

“The practice of mindfulness is really about paying attention to a particular thing, in a particular way, without judgement.”

“As I began meditating + getting more grounded … I wasn’t reacting as much to the kids’ upsets. I was being a bit more present for their questions, too.”

“When we can shift into a meditative place, mundane activities build gratitude in us. And so our life becomes more joyous + beautiful + becomes a meditation in motion.”

“A formal practice gives you the muscle memory + tools when you’re out living your daily life to check in when you’re busy doing the busy mom + dad tasks.”

Practicing mindfulness allows you to slow down, take it all in, focus on yourself + practice self-care.”

“Give yourself a lot of grace. Know that the practice – even just a few minutes every day – will add up over time.”
