020: Zero-Waste Baby Steps

Zero-waste baby steps for absolutely everyone.

“The term ‘zero-waste’ sounds really daunting, especially for normal people (with) busy lives … but if you take it slow it’s really not that overwhelming.”

To celebrate our 20th episode, I’m thrilled to offer Part One of a Two-Part series on the zero-waste lifestyle!

This week, I present two mini-interviews with women on different stages of their shared journey toward sustainability:

First there’s Julie: A mission trip to Nicaragua contrasted sharply with the throw-away culture of life back home. The experience catapulted Julie toward the zero-waste movement soon after.

Then there’s Laura: On a whim + without first informing her husband, Laura signed her family up for a county-sponsored zero-waste challenge. The county accepted her application and offered guidance + support as they significantly reduced their garbage production by 30 pounds per week.

With Julie + Lara’s help, today’s episode covers So. Much. Ground. We:

– Outline practical, action-oriented first steps,

– Highlight the importance of having Zero-Waste Wishlist, and

– Uncover three hidden, oft-overlooked benefits of the zero-waste lifestyle (some WILL  surprise you!)

I’m delighted to introduce you to Julie Winpisinger + Laura Durenburger!

Nature As Medicine

Are we treating the symptoms of modern life while simultaneously ignoring our habitat?

The average American now spends 93% of their life indoors. But humans evolved for millennia alongside the natural world, and research suggests that our indoor lifestyle is disrupting our sleep, focus and long-term health.

You don’t need a gym membership or expensive workout gear to get your health back on track. On today’s show, Dr. John La Puma argues that all you need is a 17-minute dose of nature, every single day.

Here’s a preview:

[4:00] Modern medicine tends to prioritize intervention over prevention. But why?

[7:30] We’re taught to fear the outdoors, but indoor living can be directly harmful in ways we’re only beginning to understand

[11:30] Why it’s time to view “screen time” as “ultra-processed time”

[16:00] Exactly how a daily dose of morning sunlight resets insulin sensitivity, hunger timing, and prefrontal cortex function

[30:00] Outside exercise is better for you than inside exercise, so take your movement outdoors!
