Here’s Where to Rent Tools the 21st Century Way

Need a tool on a limited basis? Don’t buy new; don't spend $$ renting from a big-box store, either. Here's where + how to rent what you need.

Have a project you want to get done but no tools to complete it with?

Don’t buy new tools that you’ll only use once or twice; don’t spend extra money renting from a big-name, big-box retailer, either.

2019 is all about tool rental: Here’s how.

[Note: While this is a sponsored post, all opinions are my own.]

Need a tool?

_____

Need a tool or piece of specialized equipment on a limited basis? You’re not alone.

8 years ago, my husband + I purchased our first home. While we wanted to make some much-needed updates to the kitchen + bathroom, we didn’t have the funds to hire a contractor.

So we studied our (long) list of action items + decided to tackle the ones we felt reasonably comfortable attempting ourselves.

First item on the list? Installing a kitchen backsplash.

Choosing the tiles was thrilling; watching YouTube videos convinced us we could handle the job despite our limited knowledge.

We were quickly dismayed, however, when we added up the price tags of necessary tools. A grout cutter, a wide-blade scraper, a tile saw + a notched trowel were just a few of the job-specific tools we needed but didn’t have.

So we did the only thing we could do back in 2011: We bit the bullet + purchased All. The. Tools. from a big-box store.

We convinced ourselves they were an investment; we promised ourselves we would use them again someday.

But – 8 years later – we haven’t used any of these tools a second time.

Instead, they remain in a bucket in the garage somewhere, collecting dust + spiderwebs.

The 21st Century way

_____

I can’t believe it took so many years for the solution to arrive, but it’s (finally) here: Sparetoolz.

Sparetoolz is an app that’s revolutionizing the way you + I tackle home improvement projects in 2019 by facilitating peer-to-peer tool tool rentals in our own communities:

Tool renters save money by renting at reasonable rates + avoid the clutter associated with storing a bunch of infrequently-used tools.

Tool owners rent their tools to others who need them (+ make a bit of money in the process).

Sounds awesome, right? It gets better: Sparetoolz isn’t just for tools, in case home improvement isn’t your thing. On the app, you’ll find:

– Seasonal items (lawnmowers + snow blowers)

– Landscaping equipment (leaf blowers, weed whackers)

– Heavy-duty cleaning equipment (Wet-Vacs, industrial vacuum cleaners)

– Safety accessories (hard hats, protective eyewear)

Renting is best

_____

As an eco-friendly minimalist, I know that the state of our landfills isn’t pretty. As such, I believe that buying new should always be a last resort.

Sparetoolz is where I rent tools because the app enables me to get my hands on the exact items I need without wasting money, time + Earth’s precious resources by buying new.

Renting instead of buying (+ ultimately discarding down the road) avoids adding even more to our already overtaxed waste management systems in the form of plastic, metal + nonrecyclable packaging materials.

Other reasons I love Sparetoolz:

1. Sparetoolz keeps my home clutter-free because I’m saved the hassle of holding onto excessive + unnecessary specialized items.

2. Renting from neighbors means I don’t have to drive to a store, sit in shopping mall-related traffic + wait in long lines. I’m keeping my money local, too, by investing in my own community.

3.  Payment transactions are secure + done over the app, so there are no awkward “Where’s my money?” moments with my neighbors.

4. Sparetoolz works around my unique schedule by allowing me to rent by the day, week or month.

5. Sparetoolz validates user profiles so I can be confident my neighbors are who they say they are.

Where to rent tools

_____

Renting with Sparetoolz is as easy as downloading the app, setting up an account in under 3 minutes, browsing available tools + requesting what you need from your neighbor.

It’s just that easy.

To list your unused tools for rental, simply take a photo of your tools, set your own rental rate + make some spare money with very little effort.

Ready to get started?

_____

The Sparetoolz app is currently available for free download in the App store.

Sparetoolz is newly launched but growing quickly, so if you’re a renter and you don’t see anything available for rent in your area just yet, be patient! Tool owners, it’s up to you—if you want to make some side cash with virtually no effort, get your tools up there, stat!

Android users: Stay tuned, your Sparetoolz app is coming soon!

The Shopping Conspiracy

Women have been targeted for decades with the message that shopping is recreation. It’s a way to relax and unwind, sure, but recreational shopping also contributes to the climate crisis, supports the worst of shareholder capitalism, and creates an awful lot of unnecessary waste.

Enter Buy Now: The Shopping Conspiracy, a hard-hitting new Netflix documentary that forces viewers to look at our waste-related woes. On today’s show producer Flora Bagenal offers a behind-the-scenes look at the documentary’s creation; she also answers your pressing, post-viewing questions.
