Opting Out

Opting Out

Are you consuming the news, or is the news consuming you?

While it’s certainly important to be informed, there’s a line in the sand between being adequately informed and over-informed. For many of us, regularly crossing that line leads to negative health and wellness effects.

On today’s show: how to protect your headspace while also staying informed.

Here’s a preview:

[3:00] 5 reasons why it’s so darn easy to get caught up in the news cycle

[15:00] Headline stress disorder’s effect of excessive new consumption on our physical and mental health

[18:00] The dopamine loop: 2 reasons why overconsumption of stuff is similar to overconsumption of news

[27:00] 3 tips and a final word

  1. Hi Stephanie,

Thanks for your podcast. I have been listening for a couple of years now and enjoy your down-to-earth style. I just wanted to share a couple of things with you. In this opt-out episode, you spoke about “good news” stories. You should check out an Australian website called Future Crunch. https://futurecrun.ch/ There is a free and subscriber version. Nothing but good news! Mostly about the environment but not always.

The other thing is that you have used the word infinitesimal twice in two different episodes. This one and another recent one. You used it to describe something BIG, but it means very small! Very small and approaching zero in size. Sorry the teacher in me could not let that one go!

    Kind regards
    Robyn

Beyond the Beige

We’ve all seen the images. The stark white rooms, the single designer chair, the perfectly curated capsule wardrobe. We’re told that if we just clear the clutter, we’ll find peace.

But if we’re not careful, the minimalist aesthetic can become just another thing to buy, another thing to consume.

On today’s show, Melora Johnson deconstructs the modern minimalist movement so that each of us can move from the clutter-free, beige-everything  minimalist aesthetic to a deeper, more sustainable practice rooted in intentionality.

Here’s a preview:

[7:30] Feeling that donation high? Here’s why decluttering and donating feels so good in the moment but often fails to stop the cycle of re-accumulation

[11:30] Can authentic minimalism exist in a consumerist culture?

[16:00] Candid thoughts on how and why minimalism has been commercialized

[25:00] How to tell if your minimalism is driving more shopping or actually shrinking your ecological footprint
