070: The Basics of Minimalist Kitchens + Minimalist Cooking

The average American kitchen has a whopping 1,019 items but the truth is you actually need, much, much less. That's right: minimalist kitchens still cook. Here's how to declutter the most important room in your home; here's how to simplify cooking for a family the minimalist way, too.

Did you know? The average American kitchen holds a whopping 1,019 items.

Yet professional chefs argue that fully functioning kitchens demand *just* 16 items. No need to spend an arm + a leg on top of the line models, either: you, too, can whip up delectable meals with just 16 items that cost under $300 total.

This week, I’m dabbling in the concepts of minimalists kitchens + minimalist cooking with simplicity wellness coach Mirley Guerra Graf.

Mirley believes that healthy living starts in a minimalist kitchen; I agree. On today’s episode we identify the gadgets you need, the gadgets you don’t need + how, exactly, to declutter the heart of your home.

If cooking for your household is a stress-inducing affair, you’ll want to stick around for Mirley’s tips on making healthy meals without extra work, too.

Enjoy!

Nature As Medicine

Are we treating the symptoms of modern life while simultaneously ignoring our habitat?

The average American now spends 93% of their life indoors. But humans evolved for millennia alongside the natural world, and research suggests that our indoor lifestyle is disrupting our sleep, focus and long-term health.

You don’t need a gym membership or expensive workout gear to get your health back on track. On today’s show, Dr. John La Puma argues that all you need is a 17-minute dose of nature, every single day.

Here’s a preview:

[4:00] Modern medicine tends to prioritize intervention over prevention. But why?

[7:30] We’re taught to fear the outdoors, but indoor living can be directly harmful in ways we’re only beginning to understand

[11:30] Why it’s time to view “screen time” as “ultra-processed time”

[16:00] Exactly how a daily dose of morning sunlight resets insulin sensitivity, hunger timing, and prefrontal cortex function

[30:00] Outside exercise is better for you than inside exercise, so take your movement outdoors!
